Flight-Hour Cost vs. Fixed Price vs. Cap-Cost: Choosing a Pricing Model

RepMan News

One of the first questions we get from an airline evaluating RepMan isn't about capability — it's about how the bill works. Component MRO can be priced several different ways, and the right choice depends on your fleet size, utilisation pattern, and how your finance team likes to budget.

Flight-hour cost

Under a flight-hour cost model, you pay a rate per flight hour flown, and that rate covers the component maintenance associated with that usage. It's a natural fit for airlines that want maintenance spend to scale directly with how much the aircraft actually flies — heavier utilisation costs more, lighter utilisation costs less, and there's no guessing between billing cycles.

Fixed price

A fixed price model sets a set cost per repair or overhaul event, agreed in advance. It's the simplest model to reconcile against a budget line: you know exactly what a given component repair will cost before you commit to it, which suits airlines that prefer certainty on a per-job basis over a longer-term average.

Cap-cost programmes

A cap-cost programme sets a maximum spend over a defined period, protecting against the risk of an unusually expensive overhaul or a cluster of repairs landing in the same quarter. It trades some of the granularity of fixed pricing for a ceiling on total exposure — useful for airlines that want predictability at the budget level rather than the per-component level.

Leasing & exchange

Alongside these three, component leasing and exchange arrangements can reduce aircraft-on-ground time: instead of waiting for your own unit to be repaired, a serviceable exchange unit goes on the aircraft immediately while your original component is overhauled on its own timeline.

Which one is right for you?

There's no universally "best" model — a young, high-utilisation fleet often leans toward flight-hour cost, while an airline managing a tight annual maintenance budget may prefer a cap-cost programme. Many of our customers actually mix models across different component categories. Talk to us about your fleet and we'll help you work out which structure fits best.
